Still a long way to go to make the Commonwealth affordable for small businesses

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BOSTON, MA (May 28, 2025) – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization with thousands of members across the Commonwealth, reacts to Governor Maura Healey’s announcement today on reducing business regulations:

“Reducing red tape and bureaucracy is always welcome news for small businesses, and we are appreciative that Governor Healey recognizes the need to make it easier for employers to operate,” said Christopher Carlozzi, NFIB’s Massachusetts state director. “However, if Massachusetts truly means business, lawmakers must add the nearly $5 billion in unemployment insurance debt that business owners are forced to repay into that shredder. Right now, Massachusetts means increased UI taxes, rising energy prices, and double-digit health insurance premium increases. Today’s announcement was a wonderful first step, but we still have a long way to go to make the Commonwealth affordable for small businesses.”

NFIB’s recently conducted a radio and digital ad campaign urging legislators to reform the state’s broken unemployment insurance system. For more on NFIB’s UI campaign visit ProtectMassachusettsSmallBusiness.org.
