Property Tax Reform in North Dakota

In North Dakota, supporters of the measure to eliminate property taxes submitted signatures on June 28th. The Secretary of State then had 35 days to verify the signatures. The results are expected to be announced no later than August 2nd.

The measure would stop political subdivisions from levying property taxes based on home valuations. The legislature would be required to send over $2 billion back to political subdivisions to make up for the current taxes that are levied. This amount is not tied to inflation.

The measure also allows political subdivisions to levy taxes that are not based on valuation. For example, a political subdivision could levy a new property tax that is based on home square footage or lot size.

Opposition to this measure includes the Greater North Dakota Chamber, all major city chambers of commerce, the Lignite Energy Industry, and North Dakota United that represents teachers and state employees.

NFIB North Dakota is not supporting or opposing the measure at this time. However, we do encourage true property tax reform that will give North Dakotans and North Dakota small businesses the chance to grow and thrive for years to come.
