Nebraska Job Creators Urge Legislature to Reject Sales Tax Hike, New Tax on Advertising Agencies

“…given our state’s enormous budget surpluses, raising the sales tax, and creating a new tax on advertising agencies makes little sense.”

LINCOLN (March 27, 2024) – The Nebraska Legislature is considering both a sales tax increase and a new tax on advertising agencies, such as Google and Facebook. Many local job creators rely on advertising agencies to promote their businesses, and taxing these services will increase their costs. Warning that these tax proposals will harm small business owners and their customers, NFIB State Director Ryan McIntosh said:

“We know that inflation continues to present an enormous challenge for our small business owners, as our job creators battle elevated costs and higher interest rates. Nebraska small business owners are no exception and desperately need property tax relief. However, given our state’s enormous budget surpluses, raising the sales tax, and creating a new tax on advertising agencies makes little sense. Both taxes will result in higher costs for Main Street businesses, their employees, and their customers. We urge lawmakers to reject new taxes on Nebraskans.”

Background:

A recent NFIB study found that 23 percent of small business owners reported that inflation was their single most important business problem in operating their business, up three points from last month and replacing labor quality as the top problem. CLICK HERE to view the report.
